Research Interests:

I am broadly interested in phylogeny and population genetics of marine invertebrates. Most of my research focuses on polychaete and sipunculan worms. Although sometimes cryptic, these worms are ubiquitous in a variety of habitats and play important roles in marine ecosystems. I examine how different species are related to each other and how they disperse from one location to another. Many species are benthic as adults but have pelagic larval stages which are critical for the dispersal of the species. When studying population dynamics it is therefore important to understand the complete life cycle. To address questions of life history, phylogeny and population structure, I use a combination of molecular and morphological techniques. Molecular techniques primarily focus on DNA sequencing of commonly used genetic markers. Morphological techniques include light and electron microscopy as well as immunohistochemistry and confocal laser scanning microscopy.
